渋谷の駅前の大交差点は、かつては水の底にあり、そのまわりを宮益坂側からと道玄坂側からと、ふたつの方角のなだらかな斜面が、取り囲んでいた。その斜面に、古代人は横穴を掘って、墳墓をつくっていた。とくに陽あたりのよい宮益坂側の斜面が好まれた様子で、死者たちはそこに掘り抜かれた墳墓から、豊かな水たまりを見下ろしていた。渋谷駅とその前の大交差点のあたりは、こうして長いこと、死霊に見守られ続けていたのである。
